Exercise is not limited to just body composition benefits, even if you are lean from a good diet and good discipline, you should still be training.
Today I will focus on aerobic exercise and one of its secret yet amazing benefits. Aerobic exercise can improve your cognitive function.
There is a part of your brain called the hippocampus which as we age, shrinks and results in impaired memory and increased risk for dementia and Alzheimer’s.
Research has shown that this part of the brain is larger in higher-fit adults and also that aerobic exercise can increase the size of this portion of the brain, leading to improved memory function. Studies have been performed with older adults and younger people with great results. Result done with young males showed that 5 weeks of intense cycling training improved both cardio fitness and cognitive function.
Another study in older adults showed that walking 40mins 3 times per week for a year was enough for growth in the hippocampus and the groups that exercised performed better on spatial memory tests. Also the people who started the testing with good aerobic fitness performed the best at the tests.
There are however new studies showing that within a relatively short time of ceasing exercise, the new neurons will disappear and function decline back to normal levels.
So what does this mean? Everyone should be exercising wherever and whenever possible right up until they are no longer physically capable.
