Back in 1990 I asked my parents if they would get me a home gym weight set for Christmas so that I could workout and get big. I can still remember how excited I was Christmas morning when I woke up and saw the HUGE box under the Christmas tree.

After ripping through all the fancy wrapping paper and colored bows there was a York 2001 Home Gym Machine and a York Barbell and Dumbbell set. We set it up that very day and I did my first official weight training workout on Christmas day 1990.

That was the start of « Lee Hayward’s Total Fitness Bodybuilding ». Over the years we expanded on that basic home gym and I spent my first 8 years in the Iron Game lifting at home in my basement.

I competed in 3 provincial bodybuilding competitions and won the Mr. Newfoundland Junior Division and Open Middleweight Class Title in 1996 while training from my simple little home gym.

So you can certainly build muscle and make gains training from home…

However, if you have a choice I think you can make « better progress » training at a well equipped commercial gym.

Not only will you have access to better quality equipment and a much wider variety of exercises to choose from, but the atmosphere is generally higher energy which can help with working out.

Unless you’re very self motivated, it’s easy to get lazy working out at home by yourself. But when you go to the pubic gym, you’re surrounded by other people who are working out, this positive energy can help motivate you to train harder and do more than you probably would do by yourself.

About 70% of my workouts are done at a public gym, I currently train at Platinum Gym in Conception Bay South Newfoundland

And 30% of my workouts are done in my home gym, where I have a basic free weight set up with barbell, bench, rack, dumbbells, rubber fitness bands, etc.

By having both a home gym and a membership to a public gym you are stacking the odds in your favor to help make it easier for you to workout and be consistent.

I’ll use my home gym for those times when I’m too busy to get to the public gym, when the weather outside is too bad, or if I want to add in extra workouts to bring up stubborn body parts, etc.
