Description

Oro Valley Fitness Center ( personal trainer Cindy Blockburger, demonstrates how to do walking lunges while carrying 25 pound weights in each hand. This is an excellent addition to any workout routine. This movement works primarily the gluteus maximus and quadriceps. You can do it with more weight, less weight or no weights, depending on your fitness level. Always start with a low weight and work your way up to a more challenging weight. If balance is an issue, lighter weights will help protect the knees.

Instructions:
Stand with the legs slightly apart and hold a weight or dumbell in each hand.
Inhale and take a big step forward, keeping your torso as straight as possible.
When your front leg is parallel to the floor and your back leg’s knee taps the floor, begin your forward and up movement.
Step past the supporting foot and reach out again.
Repeat.

Try not to lean forward and squat up from the outstretched posture. Focus on pulling the body forward and up at the same time.

Variations:
Taking smaller steps works the quadriceps of the forward leg.
Larger steps work more of the glutes of the forward leg and stretch the rectus femoris and iliopsoas of the back leg.
