PADI Rescue Course – Exercise 6 Surfacing Unresponsive Diver PADI IDC Course

    Video

    Description

The PADI Surfacing Unresponsive Diver Skill is a very important PADI Rescue skill to learn in the unlikely event you encounter an unresponsive diver underwater. You can then use the PADI Surfacing Unresponsive Diver skill to bring the unresponsive diver to the surface in a controlled manner. The Surfacing the Unresponsive Diver skill is also a populair Rescue skill during the PADI IDC course and the PADI IE Instructor Examination –

As a PADI Divemaster you will lead fun divers or assist PADI Open Water Diver courses. As a PADI Diving Instructor you will teach brand new Open Water Divers. This is truly one of the best jobs in the world, but it might happen that you encounter a diver that is unresponsive underwater.

How to perform the PADI Surfacing the Unresponsive Diver Skill correctly:

    1. One diver lay’s unresponsive on the bottom
    2. Swim up to the unresponsive diver and check is he is responsive
    3. If not, then deflate your BCD and cradle your knees around the unresponsive divers scuba tank
    4. Have your right hand under his or her arm and open the airway while holding the unresponsive diver’s regulator’s second stage in place
    5. With your left hand use the unresponsive diver’s LPI to control the ascent slowly to the surface
    6. At the surface fully inflate the unresponsive diver, inflate yourself and remove the weight belt or/and integrated weights to become positively buoyant

Sairee Cottage Diving on Koh Tao in Thailand teaches this skill multiple times over and this is also a PADI Rescue skill that can come up on the PADI IE (Instructor Examination).

There are more PADI IDC Rescue Diver skills that PADI Platinum Course Director Marcel van den Berg teaches at Sairee Cottage Diving on Koh Tao in Thailand. Please check out this other YouTube video here:

What is important to understand is that there are many different ways to perform these skills and I understand if there are diving instructors or Divemasters that think you should perform the rescue skills differently. This YouTube video is not designed to show the best way, it’s shows an easy way to retain the steps, get the highest IDC/IE points and indicates a great way for real life teaching, depending on the dive instructors opinion, teaching style, conditions and PADI Rescue, IDC or Divemaster students.

This is the PADI objective from the PADI Instructor Manual:

Exercise 6 – Surfacing the Unresponsive Diver

Bring an unresponsive diver to the surface using
buoyancy control of either the unresponsive diver or the
    rescuer.

PADI Platinum Course Director Marcel van den Berg at Sairee Cottage Diving on Koh Tao in Thailand created a PADI DMT and IDC course that surpasses the minimum PADI standards to ensure the highest quality and chance of your success. Together with IDC Staff Instructors he will teach you a PADI Divemaster course where you have to assist extra PADI Rescue courses to make sure your IDC will be easier to successfully complete.
